The are (a) is a unit of area in the metric system, equal to 100 square metres or one hundredth of a hectare. It was introduced by the French Republican government in 1793 as part of the original metric system. Although largely superseded by the hectare for practical use, the are is still encountered in some European countries for land measurement. The hectare, equal to 100 ares, remains the standard metric unit for agricultural land area.
