The electron cross section (also called the Thomson cross section) is a unit of area representing the effective scattering area of a free electron for electromagnetic radiation, approximately 6.6524 × 10-29 m². It is defined as (8π/3)re², where re is the classical electron radius, and is fundamental in Compton scattering and radiation physics calculations.
