Add Page Numbers to PDF

Free tool to add page numbers to a PDF. Choose where they go and how they look, and skip the cover if you like, right in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

The file is read by your browser and is not sent anywhere. No upload, no storage.

What it does

Page numbers are drawn onto each page as ordinary text in a standard PDF font, so they print sharply and can be selected and searched like the rest of the document. The tool places them where you see them: a page that is stored sideways and turned by the reader still gets its number at the bottom of what you see, not along the side. The rest of the document is left as it was, so bookmarks, links and form fields keep working.

How to use it

  1. Choose a PDF from your device. It is read in the browser and goes no further.
  2. Pick the position, format and size, and which pages to number.
  3. Add the numbers and the new file downloads straight away.

Frequently asked questions

How do I leave the cover without a number?
Start the pages to number at 2, for example 2-10 for a ten-page file, and keep the first number at 1. The second page of the file then shows 1, and totals such as 1 / 9 count only the numbered pages.

Can I start at a number other than 1?
Yes. Set the first number, for example to continue the numbering of a previous chapter. It goes on the first page you number, and the following pages count up from there.

Will the numbers cover my text?
They sit inside the distance from the edge you choose, where most documents have blank space. If a page has content right at the edge, pick another corner or a larger distance.

Can I number a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. A protected file has to be unlocked before it can be changed, and doing that here would mean asking for the password, which a page that promises not to upload anything should not be asking for. This includes files that open without a password but restrict editing, as many bank statements do. Remove the protection in your PDF reader first.

Are my documents uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read by your browser and the new one is built in the page itself. There is no upload and nothing is stored, and once the page has loaded it keeps working with the network switched off.
