Car Lease Calculator
Free car lease calculator: monthly payment from the price, residual value, money factor or APR, down payment, trade-in and sales tax, plus the total cost.
What it does
A lease payment has two parts. Depreciation is the value the car loses while you drive it: the capitalized cost (the negotiated price plus fees, minus the down payment and trade-in) minus the residual value, spread over the months. The rent charge is the interest: the capitalized cost plus the residual, times the money factor. Most states then charge sales tax on each payment. This calculator shows each part, the total you pay and the price to buy the car at the end.
How to use it
- Type the MSRP and the price you negotiated with the dealer, plus the fees added to the lease.
- Add the residual value and the money factor (or APR) from the lease offer, and the term.
- Enter the down payment, trade-in and your sales tax rate to see the monthly payment and the total cost.
The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.
Frequently asked questions
What is a money factor?
It is the interest rate of a lease written another way. Multiply it by 2,400 to get the APR: a money factor of 0.00125 is a 3% APR. Ask the dealer for it, because it can be marked up above the rate the leasing company approved.
What is the residual value?
The value the leasing company expects the car to have at the end, as a percentage of the MSRP. It is set by the lender, not negotiated. A higher residual means less depreciation and a lower payment; it is also the price to buy the car when the lease ends.
Should I put money down on a lease?
A down payment lowers the monthly payment, but if the car is stolen or totaled early, the insurance pays the leasing company and that money is usually lost. Many buyers prefer to pay only the first month and the fees at signing.
How is sales tax charged on a lease?
In most states the tax is charged on each monthly payment, which is how this calculator does it. A few states, such as Texas and Illinois, tax the whole price or the total of the payments up front, so check your state's rule.
