Simplified ↔ Traditional Chinese Converter
Convert Simplified Chinese to Traditional and back, with Taiwan and Hong Kong variants and vocabulary (软件 → 軟體). Free, in your browser, using OpenCC.
What it does
This converter turns Simplified Chinese (used in mainland China and Singapore) into Traditional Chinese (used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau) and back. It does not swap character by character: one simplified character can stand for several traditional ones (发 is 發 in 发展 but 髮 in 头发), and the converter picks the right one from the words around it. The Taiwan vocabulary mode also replaces words that differ between regions, such as 软件 → 軟體 and 鼠标 → 滑鼠. It uses OpenCC, the open-source dictionaries behind most Chinese input methods and websites.
How to use it
- Choose the direction: to Traditional (Taiwan, Hong Kong or standard) or to Simplified.
- Type, paste or open a text file. The result appears as you type, with the changed characters highlighted.
- Copy the result or download it as a .txt file. Swap reverses the direction.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Taiwan and Hong Kong modes?
Some characters are written differently in each region: 里 becomes 裡 in Taiwan and 裏 in Hong Kong, for example. The standard mode follows the OpenCC reference forms.
What does “with vocabulary” do?
Besides the characters, it replaces words that mainland China and Taiwan say differently: 软件 → 軟體 (software), 信息 → 資訊 (information), 打印机 → 印表機 (printer). Use it for software, websites and documents for Taiwanese readers; leave it off for names and quotations.
Is the text sent anywhere?
No. The dictionaries are downloaded once and the conversion runs in your browser. The text never leaves your computer.
Is the conversion always correct?
It is very accurate for everyday text, but no automatic converter is perfect: rare names, classical Chinese and words with two possible readings can need a human check. The highlighting shows exactly what changed.
Why is Traditional to Simplified easier?
Because several traditional characters merged into one simplified character, so going to Simplified rarely has to choose. Going to Traditional has to choose between the possible characters, which is why the converter looks at whole words.
