Chinese Zodiac Calculator
The Chinese zodiac gives each year one of twelve animals and one of five elements. The year starts on Chinese New Year, not on 1 January, so people born in January or early February often belong to the previous year's animal.
How to use it
- Choose your date of birth.
- See your animal, element and yin or yang, and when that Chinese year began and ended.
- Check the list of years of your animal from 1900 to 2099.
Frequently asked questions
When does the Chinese year start?
On Chinese New Year, usually the second new moon after the winter solstice, which falls between 21 January and 20 February. If you were born before that date, your animal is the one of the previous year.
How is the element worked out?
Each year has a heavenly stem that gives one of five elements, wood, fire, earth, metal or water, two years in a row, alternating yang and yin. With the twelve animals this makes a cycle of 60 years.
Why can BaZi give a different animal?
Chinese fortune telling with the Four Pillars uses the solar year, which starts at Lichun around 4 February, instead of Chinese New Year. Between those two dates the two rules give different animals, and this page shows both.
