Decibel Metre

Allow the microphone and the page shows the sound level around you, updated eight times per second, with the A-weighting used by sound level metres. It also keeps the minimum, the maximum and the average level (Leq). The audio is analysed in your browser and never recorded or sent.

Calibrate

Place the device next to a calibrated sound level metre, play a steady sound and adjust the offset until both show the same value. The offset is saved in this browser.

How to use it

  1. Click Start and allow the microphone.
  2. Hold the device still, with the microphone pointing at the sound, and watch the level and the graph.
  3. For more accurate values, calibrate it against a real sound level metre.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is a decibel metre on a phone or computer?
Built-in microphones are not calibrated, so the reading is an estimate that can be off by several decibels, and very quiet or very loud sounds are out of their range. To compare noise levels it works well; for legal or work-safety measurements use a certified metre.

What is dB(A)?
Decibels with A-weighting, a filter that follows how human hearing is less sensitive to low and very high frequencies. It is the scale used in noise rules and hearing safety limits. dB(Z) is the unweighted level.

How loud is too loud?
Hearing damage depends on level and time. A common safety limit is 85 dB(A) for 8 hours a day, and every 3 dB more halves the safe time: about 15 minutes at 100 dB(A).
