Ideal Weight Calculator

Free ideal weight calculator: your ideal body weight by the Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi formulas and the healthy weight range for your height.

Healthy weight range (BMI 18.5–24.9)
β€”Devine (1974)
β€”Robinson (1983)
β€”Miller (1983)
β€”Hamwi (1964)

What it does

There is no single ideal weight: these formulas estimate a reference weight from height and sex alone. Devine (1974), Robinson (1983), Miller (1983) and Hamwi (1964) were created mainly for medicine doses and give somewhat different results, so the calculator shows all four and their average. It also shows the healthy weight range for your height by body mass index (BMI 18.5 to 24.9), which is the range most health agencies use.

How to use it

  1. Choose metric or imperial units and your sex.
  2. Type your height.
  3. Compare the four formulas with the healthy range by BMI.

These are estimates for healthy adults and do not replace advice from a doctor, dietitian or coach. The calculation runs in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Which formula is the most accurate?
None is exact for a given person: they were fitted to population data decades ago. Devine is the one most used in medicine; the BMI range is a better guide for health because it allows a span of weights.

Why doesn't it ask for my age or body frame?
These formulas use only height and sex. Muscle, bone structure and age change what is healthy for you, which is why a muscular athlete can be above the range and still be healthy.

Is the BMI range the same for everyone?
It is the standard adult range of the World Health Organisation. Some countries use lower cut-offs for people of Asian origin, and it does not apply to children or pregnancy.

What matters more than the number?
Waist size, body fat, fitness and habits. A waist below half your height is a simple sign of lower health risk, whatever the scale says.
