What it does

ASCII art draws a picture with letters and symbols: dark areas use dense characters such as @ and #, light areas use dots and spaces. This tool measures the brightness of each part of the image and picks a character for it, so the result can be pasted into a chat, code comment or terminal.

Everything happens in your browser: the image is opened, changed on a canvas and saved again on your device, and nothing is uploaded. Photos from phones that are stored sideways with an orientation tag are turned the right way first, so what you see is what you get.

How to use it

  1. Choose an image from your device, or drag it onto the page.
  2. Adjust the options and check the result in the preview.
  3. Download the new image; the original file is not changed.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is processed by your browser on your own device and never leaves it, which also makes the tool work offline once the page has loaded.

Why does the ASCII art look stretched?
It needs a monospaced font, where every character has the same width. In a normal font the lines have different lengths; paste it into a code block or set the font to a monospaced one.

Which width should I choose?
40 to 80 characters fits a chat or a terminal; 100 to 160 shows more detail for wide screens. Simple images with strong contrast work best.
