What it does
In Japan a company employee pays social insurance on a standard monthly salary: health insurance at the rate of their prefecture, long-term care insurance from age 40, the new child and childcare support levy, the employees' pension and employment insurance. Then come income tax, with the reconstruction surtax, and the resident tax of about 10%. The 2026 tax reform raised the basic deduction to up to ¥1.04 million and the minimum salary deduction to ¥740,000. This calculator applies the 2026 rates and shows the take-home pay per month and per year.
How to use it
- Type your annual salary (or your monthly salary) and choose your prefecture.
- Type your age, which decides the long-term care insurance, and your spouse and dependants.
- See each insurance, the income tax, the resident tax and the take-home pay per month and per year.
The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the take-home pay on ¥5 million a year?
For a single person under 40 in Tokyo with no bonus, about ¥3.94 million a year, or about ¥329,000 a month: social insurance takes about ¥723,000, income tax about ¥92,000 and resident tax about ¥243,000.
What changed in 2026?
The basic deduction rose to ¥1.04 million for incomes up to ¥4.89 million and the minimum salary deduction to ¥740,000, so no income tax is due up to about ¥1.78 million of salary. The new child and childcare support levy started in April 2026, and most prefectures lowered their health insurance rate.
Why does the prefecture matter?
The Kyōkai Kenpo health insurance, used by most small and medium companies, has a different rate in each prefecture, from 9.21% in Niigata to 10.55% in Saga in 2026, split half and half with the employer. Large companies often have their own health insurance society with other rates.
Why is there no resident tax in my first year?
The resident tax is calculated on the previous year's income and deducted from June to May of the following year. In your first year of work you pay none; from the second year it is deducted every month, which is why the take-home pay often drops in June of the second year.
