The metre (Commonwealth spelling and BIPM spelling) or metre (American spelling) (from the French unit mètre, from the Greek noun μετρούν, "measure") is the base unit of length in the International System of Units (SI). It was historically used in Scandinavia for measuring cloth and textiles, much like the English ell.
