Long Division Calculator

Type the dividend and the divisor to see the division worked out step by step, as it is taught in school, with the quotient, the remainder and the decimal digits.

How to use it

  1. Type the dividend (the number being divided) and the divisor.
  2. Choose how many decimal places and the layout used in your school.
  3. Follow the steps: divide, multiply, subtract and bring down the next digit.

Frequently asked questions

How does long division work?
Take the first digits of the dividend that make a number at least as large as the divisor, see how many times the divisor fits, subtract, bring down the next digit and repeat until no digits are left.

How do I divide by a decimal?
Move the decimal point of the divisor to the right until it is a whole number, and move the dividend's by the same number of places: 12.5 ÷ 0.25 is the same as 1250 ÷ 25.

What is a repeating decimal?
When a remainder repeats, the digits after it repeat forever: 1 ÷ 7 = 0.(142857). This happens whenever the divisor, in lowest terms, has prime factors other than 2 and 5.
