What it does

The percentage is the total of the marks you obtained divided by the total maximum marks, times 100. Adding the marks first, rather than averaging the subject percentages, gives the right weight to subjects with a different maximum, such as a 50-mark practical next to 100-mark theory papers.

How to use it

  1. Enter the marks obtained and the maximum for each subject.
  2. Use “Add a subject” for more rows; empty rows are ignored.
  3. Read the total, the percentage and each subject’s percentage.

The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the percentage of marks?
Divide the marks obtained by the maximum marks and multiply by 100. For 425 out of 500 that is 425 ÷ 500 × 100 = 85%.

Should I average the subject percentages instead?
Only if every subject has the same maximum. When the maximums differ, the average of percentages gives too much weight to the smaller papers.
