Microphone Test

Test your microphone online for free: see the input level in real time, record 5 seconds and listen back, and switch microphones, without installing anything.

πŸ”’ Everything happens in your browser: the sound is not sent anywhere, and the test recording disappears when you leave the page.

What it does

This test opens your microphone in the browser and shows the input level in real time, with a waveform and the peak in decibels, so you can see at once whether it picks up your voice and whether the volume is right. You can record five seconds and listen back to hear yourself as others hear you in a call, choose another microphone and check the sample rate and the processing the browser applies.

How to use it

  1. Press test my microphone and allow access when the browser asks.
  2. Speak normally and watch the bar: it should stay mostly in the green.
  3. Record 5 seconds and listen back, or choose another microphone.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't the bar move?
Check that the right microphone is selected, that it is not muted by a switch or key, and that the input volume in the system sound settings is not at zero. Another app may also be holding the microphone exclusively.

What is a good level?
With a normal speaking voice the bar should stay in the green, with peaks around −20 to −10 dB. Above −6 dB the sound can distort; below −40 dB it is too quiet for others to hear well.

Why does my voice sound different in the recording?
Browsers apply echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain, just as in video calls, so the recording is close to what others hear. We also hear our own voice through the bones of the head, which makes it sound deeper to us.
