What it does

PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparency; JPG gives up a little detail to make files much smaller, which is what photos, email attachments and many upload forms want. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas need a background: white by default, or any colour you pick. For screenshots and drawings with sharp text, keep the quality high, because JPG blurs sharp edges more than it blurs photos.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to the transparent background?
JPG cannot store transparency, so it is replaced by a solid colour, white by default. Pick another colour if the image will sit on a coloured page. If you need to keep the transparency, convert to WebP instead, which keeps it and still makes small files.

Can I convert several images at once?
Yes. Choose as many as you like; each one is converted in turn and listed with its size before and after. Download them one by one or all together in a ZIP file.

Will my phone photos come out the right way up?
Yes. Phones often save photos lying on their side with a note saying which way is up. The converter applies that note, so the new file is upright in any program, even those that ignore it.

Can I convert HEIC photos from an iPhone?
Yes, in any browser. Safari opens HEIC by itself; in Chrome, Firefox and Edge the converter first loads a HEIC decoder, about 1.5 MB, the first time you choose a HEIC photo. The photo is still read only in your browser.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. They are read by your browser and the PDF is built in the page itself. There is no upload and nothing is stored, and once the page has loaded it keeps working with the network switched off.
