What it does

A Roth IRA is a US retirement account funded with money you have already paid tax on. The investments grow tax-free, and withdrawals in retirement (after age 59½ and five years from the first contribution) are tax-free too. For 2026 you can put in up to $7,500, or $8,600 at 50 or older, but the limit shrinks and then disappears at higher incomes. This calculator finds your limit and projects the balance, compared with the same money in a taxable account.

How to use it

  1. Type your age, the age you plan to retire and what you already have in the Roth IRA.
  2. Choose your filing status and type your modified AGI to see your 2026 limit.
  3. Type the yearly contribution and the expected return to project the balance year by year.

The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Roth IRA or traditional IRA?
With a Roth you pay the tax now and nothing later; with a traditional IRA you may deduct the contribution now and pay tax on withdrawals. The Roth tends to win if you expect a higher tax rate in retirement than today, as many young savers do.

What counts as modified AGI?
For a Roth IRA it is your adjusted gross income (line 11 of Form 1040) with a few items added back, such as excluded foreign income and deducted student loan interest, and without any Roth conversion income. For most people it is close to their AGI.

Can I take money out before retirement?
Your contributions can be withdrawn at any time without tax or penalty. The earnings are taxed and may have a 10% penalty if you take them out before 59½ or before the account is five years old, with some exceptions.

What is the deadline to contribute?
You can contribute for a tax year until the tax filing deadline of the next year, usually April 15. You also need earned income at least equal to the contribution, or a spouse with earned income if you file jointly.
