Square Footage Calculator
Free square footage calculator: add rectangles, circles, triangles and trapezoids for the area in square feet, square metres, square yards and acres, plus cost.
What it does
Measure each part of the room, floor or lot and add it as a separate shape: an L-shaped room is two rectangles. The calculator adds them up and shows the total in square feet, square metres, square yards, acres and hectares, and multiplies by the price per square foot or square metre of flooring, paint or land if you type it.
How to use it
- Choose the unit you measured in.
- Choose the shape of each part and type its measurements; add more parts if needed.
- Read the total area and, with a price, the total cost.
The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the area of an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, measure each one and add the two areas. A 12 × 15 ft room with a 6 × 8 ft nook is 180 + 48 = 228 square feet.
How many square feet are in a square metre?
10.764. A foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.0929 m². An acre is 43,560 square feet (4,047 m²) and a hectare is 10,000 m².
How much extra flooring should I buy?
About 10% for straight layouts and 15% for diagonal patterns or rooms with many corners, to cover cuts and breakage.
How do I measure a circle?
Measure across the widest part, through the centre: that is the diameter. The area is π × diameter² ÷ 4.
