What it does
Type when you started and finished each day and how many minutes of unpaid break you took. The calculator adds up the week in hours and minutes and in decimal hours, the format payroll uses: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. An end time earlier than the start time is a night shift that ends the next day. Hours above 40 in the week are overtime, paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate, as under the US federal rule.
How to use it
- Type the start and end time of each day you worked, and the unpaid break in minutes. Leave days off empty.
- Optionally, type your hourly rate and adjust the overtime rules to your job.
- Read the total, regular and overtime hours, and the gross pay for the week.
The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60: 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 is 0.5, 45 is 0.75 and 20 is 0.33. So 38 hours 20 minutes is 38.33 hours.
How is overtime calculated?
Under the US federal rule, hours above 40 in a workweek are paid at least 1.5 times the regular rate. California and a few other places also count hours above 8 in a day; with that option on, the 40 weekly hours count only the regular hours, so no hour is counted twice. Double time after 12 hours a day is not included.
What about a shift that ends after midnight?
Type the times as they are, for example 22:00 to 06:00. When the end is earlier than the start, the shift is counted as ending the next day: 8 hours.
Are breaks deducted automatically?
Only the minutes you type in the break column. Short paid rest breaks should not be typed there; only unpaid meal breaks are deducted from worked time.
