A general guide: customs vary by city and type of service. Check whether the bill already includes a service charge before adding a tip.

What it does

This calculator works out the tip on a bill and splits the total between any number of people. You can choose the percentage, round the total or each person's share up to a whole amount, and see the tip that results. The amounts are calculated in cents, so when a bill does not divide exactly it tells you who pays the extra cent. A table shows the usual tip in restaurants in almost 40 countries.

How to use it

  1. Enter the bill amount.
  2. Choose the tip percentage and the number of people.
  3. Round up if you like and see the total and how much each person pays.

The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?
It depends on the country. In the United States and Canada 15 to 20% is usual in restaurants; in much of Europe tips are smaller and service is often included; in Japan, China and South Korea tipping is not customary. The table on this page shows the usual tip in each country.

Is the tip calculated before or after tax?
Both are common. In the United States many people tip on the amount before sales tax; if you prefer that, enter the amount before tax. Where prices already include tax, the tip is simply calculated on the bill.

How does rounding work?
Round the total raises the whole bill to the next whole amount; round each person's share does the same for every person. The difference goes to the tip, and the page shows the effective percentage.
