Typing Test

Free typing speed test: measure your words per minute (WPM) and accuracy in 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds, with common words in 24 languages.

60
Type each word and press Space. The clock starts with your first key; Esc restarts.

What it does

This typing test shows random common words and measures how fast and how accurately you type them. Speed is given in words per minute (WPM), the standard measure, where every five correct characters, spaces included, count as one word. For Chinese and Japanese, the main result is characters per minute. Your accuracy counts every key you pressed, so a mistake you corrected still counts as a mistake. Your best result for each language and duration is saved in this browser only.

How to use it

  1. Choose the language of the words and the duration of the test.
  2. Click in the text box and start typing: the clock starts with the first key. Press Space after each word.
  3. When time runs out, see your speed, accuracy and the chart of your speed during the test, then try again to beat it.

Frequently asked questions

How are words per minute calculated?
By convention, a "word" is five characters. The test adds up the characters of every word you typed correctly, plus the space after each one, divides by five and then by the minutes of the test. Words with mistakes do not count towards WPM; they appear in the raw speed, which counts everything you typed.

What is a good typing speed?
Most people who type without training reach about 35 to 45 WPM. Around 60 WPM is fast enough for most office work, and trained touch typists often type 80 WPM or more. Accuracy matters as much as speed: above 95% is a good target.

Why is my accuracy lower than the words I got right?
Because accuracy counts keystrokes, not the final text. If you type a wrong letter and then fix it with Backspace, the word ends up correct but the wrong key still counts as an error. That is what shows how cleanly you really type.

How can I type faster?
Learn touch typing, with your fingers resting on the home row and without looking at the keyboard. Practise a few minutes every day, focus on accuracy first, and speed will follow. Short tests of 15 or 30 seconds are good for practice; 60 seconds gives a more reliable measure.

Can I take the test in my language?
Yes. There are word lists for 24 languages, including scripts such as Arabic, Hindi, Tamil, Thai, Khmer, Korean, Japanese and Chinese. Letters with accents and combined characters are compared as whole characters, so a letter you are still typing is not marked as wrong too early.
