Video to GIF Converter

Free video to GIF converter: cut a clip from an MP4, MOV or WebM video and turn it into an animated GIF in your browser. No upload and no watermark.

The GIF is made in your browser: your files are not uploaded anywhere.

What it does

This converter turns a short part of a video into an animated GIF, the format that plays by itself in chats, forums and emails. Open an MP4, MOV or WebM file, choose where the clip starts and ends, how many frames per second and the width, and the GIF is made frame by frame in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the sound is not kept, because GIFs have no audio.

How to use it

  1. Choose a video and play it to find the moment you want.
  2. Set the start and end (or use the current position), the frames per second and the width.
  3. Click Create GIF, check the preview and download it.

Frequently asked questions

How can I make the GIF smaller?
Lower the width, use fewer frames per second or a shorter clip, and try 128 or 64 colours. A GIF stores every frame as a full picture, so size grows quickly with width and length: 480 px at 10 frames per second is a good balance for chats.

Why does the GIF have fewer colours than the photo?
The GIF format allows at most 256 colours per frame, so photos with smooth gradients can show bands. Each frame here gets its own palette of the best 256 colours, which keeps photos looking as good as a GIF allows.

What is the fastest speed a GIF can play?
Browsers slow down frames shorter than 20 ms to 100 ms, so the fastest reliable speed is 50 frames per second. This tool goes up to 25 frames per second (40 ms per frame), which looks smooth and keeps the file a reasonable size.

How long can the GIF be?
Up to 300 frames: 30 seconds at 10 frames per second, or 12 seconds at 25. Longer animations work better as a video file, which is much smaller than a GIF of the same length.
