Word Counter
Free word counter: count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs as you type, with reading and speaking time. Works in any language, nothing is uploaded.
What it does
The counter updates with every key you press. A word is a run of letters or digits: "e-mail" and "don't" count as one word, and numbers such as 2026 count as words. In Chinese and Japanese, which do not put spaces between words, each character counts as one word, as the counters of those languages do. Reading time assumes about 200 words a minute and speaking time about 130.
How to use it
- Type your text in the box, or paste it from a document, an e-mail or a web page.
- Read the words, characters, sentences and paragraphs at the top; they change as you edit.
- Use the reading and speaking times to plan an article, a speech or a presentation.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my count different from Word or Google Docs?
Each program has its own rules for dashes, symbols and numbers. Here a dash or slash between spaces is not a word, while "well-known" is one word. The difference is usually a few words in a long text.
How long is a 1,000-word text?
About 5 minutes to read silently and about 7 to 8 minutes to read aloud. It is also roughly two pages single-spaced, or four pages double-spaced, in a 12-point font.
Are numbers and abbreviations counted?
Yes. "2026", "3.5" and "UN" each count as one word. Punctuation, emoji and symbols on their own are not words, but they do count as characters.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The counting runs in your browser, so the text never leaves your device and nothing is stored.
