Barcode Generator

Free barcode generator: create EAN-13, UPC-A, EAN-8, UPC-E, ISBN, Code 128, GS1-128, Code 39 and ITF-14 barcodes with the check digit, as PNG or SVG.

What it does

This barcode generator draws product, book and logistics barcodes in your browser, ready to print or place on a label or package design. It calculates the check digit, and when the full number you typed has a wrong one it tells you the correct digit, because a code with the wrong check digit is rejected at the checkout. It creates EAN-13 and UPC-A for retail, the short EAN-8 and UPC-E for small packages, ISBN for books, Code 128 and Code 39 for labels and inventory, GS1-128 with application identifiers such as batch and expiry date, and ITF-14 for shipping cartons. You can set the bar width, height and colors, and download a PNG or a vector SVG that stays sharp at any print size.

How to use it

  1. Choose the barcode type; the line below the field explains what each one is for.
  2. Type the number or text. The barcode updates as you type, and any problem is explained right under the field.
  3. Adjust the size and colors, then download a PNG for the screen or an SVG for print.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use these barcodes to sell products in shops?
The barcode drawn here is correct, but the number inside it has to be yours. Shops and marketplaces only accept product numbers (GTINs) licensed from GS1 to your company. Use this tool to draw the barcode for a number you have, or for internal labels, inventory and tests.

What is the check digit?
It is the last digit of EAN, UPC, ITF-14 and GTIN numbers, calculated from the others. When a scanner misreads a single digit, the check digit no longer matches and the code is rejected instead of selling the wrong product. Type the number without it and it is calculated for you.

Which type should I choose?
For retail products, EAN-13 (or UPC-A in the United States and Canada); for books, ISBN; for cartons, ITF-14; for labels with text or serial numbers, Code 128; for logistics with batch and expiry date, GS1-128. Code 39 only when a system specifically asks for it.

PNG or SVG?
SVG is a vector image: the bars stay sharp at any size, which makes it the best choice for print and packaging design. PNG is a regular image, good for screens and documents; if you need it larger, increase the bar width instead of stretching the image.

Why does the scanner not read my barcode?
Most often there is not enough contrast (dark bars on a light background work best, never the reverse), the blank margin on the sides was cut off, or the image was stretched and the bars lost their proportions. Keep the blank space around the code and print it at full size.
