What it does
Video files are large because phones and cameras record at high bitrates so they can be edited later. This compressor re-encodes the video to H.264 MP4 at a lower bitrate and, if you wish, a lower resolution, which is the format every device plays. Choose a quality level, or type the size you need in MB, for example to fit an email attachment or a chat app limit, and the tool works out the bitrate and the best resolution for it. Everything happens on your device with the browser's own video encoder: the file is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the compressed file not exactly the target size?
The encoder aims at an average bitrate, and simple scenes use less than complex ones, so the result usually lands a little under the target. The tool keeps a 4% margin for the MP4 container, and 1 MB is counted as 1,000,000 bytes, the stricter of the two meanings.
Is my video uploaded? Is there a size limit?
Nothing is uploaded: the file is read and converted on your device. The limit is your device's memory, since the result is built in memory before you download it. About 2 GB works on most computers; phones handle less.
Which browsers does it work in?
Copying, trimming, muting and rotating work in any modern browser. Re-encoding uses the WebCodecs video encoder of Chrome and Edge, Safari 16.4 or later and Firefox 130 or later. On a computer it is often faster than the video plays.
Which formats can I open?
MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and MPEG-TS (.ts) files with H.264, HEVC, VP8, VP9 or AV1 video. HEVC needs a device with HEVC decoding, which most recent phones and computers have.
