Ghanaian Cedi
The Ghanaian Cedi (sign: ₵; code: GHS) is the official currency of Ghana, a West African nation and one of the continent's more stable democracies, issued by the Bank of Ghana. The current cedi was introduced in 2007, replacing the second cedi at a rate of 10,000 old cedis per new cedi, in a redenomination aimed at simplifying transactions. The word "cedi" derives from the Akan word for cowrie shell, which was historically used as currency in the region.
