Dog Age Calculator
Dogs do not age seven years for every human year. They grow up fast in the first two years and then age at a pace that depends on their size: giant breeds age faster than small ones.
How to use it
- Type your dog's age in years and months.
- Choose its size by adult weight.
- Read the age in human years and compare it with the chart.
Frequently asked questions
Is one dog year equal to seven human years?
No, that old rule is a myth. The American Veterinary Medical Association counts the first year of a medium-sized dog as about 15 human years, the second as about 9 more and each year after that as about 5.
What is the DNA clock?
A 2020 study from the University of California San Diego compared chemical marks on the DNA of Labrador Retrievers and people and found that human age ≈ 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. It was measured on a single breed, so the chart by size is the better guide for most dogs.
When is a dog a senior?
According to the AVMA, small dogs are usually considered senior at about 7 years old, while large and giant breeds reach that stage at 5 or 6, because big dogs age faster.
