About Lorem Ipsum
Origin
The Lorem Ipsum passage has been the typesetting industry's standard placeholder text since the 1500s, when an unknown printer scrambled a passage from De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, a philosophical work by Cicero written in 45 BC. The first two words, lorem ipsum, are a garbled contraction of dolorem ipsum — Latin for pain itself — taken from Book I, section 32. The text remained obscure until the 1960s, when Letraset sheets carrying Lorem Ipsum passages brought it into wide use in graphic design.
Digital Era
The passage became ubiquitous in desktop publishing when Aldus PageMaker (1985) shipped with Lorem Ipsum as its default sample text. Since then, virtually every design application, CSS framework, and content management system has adopted it. Its lack of recognisable words in any modern language is the key feature: readers cannot get distracted by the meaning of the text and can focus entirely on the visual design — typography, spacing, line length, and layout rhythm.
When to use it
Lorem Ipsum is appropriate during wireframing and early-stage layout work, when the real copy has not yet been written. It gives stakeholders a realistic sense of text density without anchoring discussions to specific words. However, it should always be replaced with real content before publishing: search engines cannot index meaningful Lorem Ipsum, and leaving it in production is a common sign of an incomplete page.
