The carcel is a unit of luminous intensity named after the French inventor Bertrand Guillaume Carcel. One carcel equals approximately 9.61 international candelas. It was defined by the light emitted by a Carcel oil lamp and was used as a standard unit in France during the 19th century.

The candela (cd) is the SI base unit of luminous intensity. It is defined as the luminous intensity of a source that emits monochromatic radiation of frequency 540×10¹² hertz with a radiant intensity of 1/683 watt per steradian. One international candle equals one candela.
