The kip (kip) is a non-SI unit of force equal to 1,000 pound-force (lbf), or approximately 4,448.22 newtons. The name is a portmanteau of kilo and pound. It is widely used in structural and civil engineering in the United States to express large forces and loads, such as the capacity of structural members and foundations.
