Exponent Calculator
Free exponent calculator: raise any number to any power, with exact results for whole numbers of up to 5,000 digits and scientific notation.
What it does
An exponent says how many times to multiply a number by itself: 2¹⁰ = 2 × 2 × … × 2 = 1,024. This calculator raises any base to any exponent, including negative and decimal exponents, and for whole numbers it gives the exact result with every digit, up to 5,000 digits, as well as the scientific notation.
How to use it
- Type the base.
- Type the exponent.
- See the result, the number of digits and the scientific notation.
The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.
Frequently asked questions
What does a negative exponent mean?
One divided by the positive power: 2⁻³ = 1/2³ = 1/8 = 0.125.
And a fractional exponent?
It is a root: x^(1/2) is the square root and x^(3/2) is the square root of x³. With a negative base and a fractional exponent there is usually no real result.
Why is any number to the power 0 equal to 1?
Because dividing powers subtracts exponents: x³ ÷ x³ = x⁰, and any nonzero number divided by itself is 1. The case 0⁰ is usually taken as 1 too.
What are the rules of exponents?
With the same base, multiplying adds exponents (xᵃ × xᵇ = xᵃ⁺ᵇ) and dividing subtracts them; a power of a power multiplies them ((xᵃ)ᵇ = xᵃᵇ).
