Township

A <b>township</b> is a unit of land area used in the United States Public Land Survey System (PLSS), equal to a square six miles on each side, comprising an area of 36 square miles (approximately 93.24 km²). Each township is subdivided into 36 sections, each one square mile in area. The township grid was established by the Land Ordinance of 1785 and forms the basis of land description in most US states west of Ohio. Townships are identified by their position relative to a principal meridian and baseline using township and range coordinates.
