Bit
A bit (binary digit) is the most basic unit of digital information, representing a logical state with one of two possible values: 0 or 1. The term was coined by statistician John Tukey in 1946 and popularized by Claude Shannon in his foundational work on information theory. Eight bits form one byte, the standard unit of computer storage.
Gigabyte (SI, 10⁹ bytes)
The gigabyte (GB), in the SI decimal convention, equals exactly 1,000,000,000 bytes (10⁹ bytes). Storage manufacturers universally adopt this definition for hard drives, SSDs, and flash memory, while operating systems have historically used the binary gibibyte (GiB, 2³⁰ bytes). The discrepancy between decimal and binary gigabytes is often the source of confusion about advertised versus formatted disk capacity.
