In computing, a <b>character</b> is a unit of <b>digital storage</b> conventionally equal to one <b>byte</b> (8 bits), representing a single letter, digit, punctuation mark, or control symbol. The equivalence of one character to one byte originates from early ASCII encoding, where each character was stored in exactly 8 bits. Modern encodings such as UTF-8 may use multiple bytes per character, but the single-byte convention persists in many storage contexts.

A <b>bit</b> (binary digit) is the most basic unit of <b>digital information</b>, representing a logical state with one of two possible values: 0 or 1. The term was coined by statistician John Tukey in 1946 and popularized by Claude Shannon in his foundational work on information theory. Eight bits form one <b>byte</b>, the standard unit of computer storage.
