The centimetre was the base unit of length in the now deprecated centimetre–gram–second (CGS) system of units.<br /><br />Though for many physical quantities, SI prefixes for factors of 10<sup>3</sup>—like milli- and kilo-—are often preferred by technicians, the centimetre remains a practical unit of length for many everyday measurements. A centimetre is approximately the width of the fingernail of an average adult person.

The <b>kilometre</b> (SI symbol: <b>km</b> /ˈkɪləmiːtər/ or /kɪˈlɒmɪtər/), spelt kilometer in American English, is a unit of length in the metric system, equal to one thousand metres (kilo- being the SI prefix for 1000). It is now the measurement unit used for expressing distances between geographical places on land in most of the world; notable exceptions are the United States and the United Kingdom where the statute mile is the unit used.<br /><br />The abbreviations <b>k</b> or <b>Km</b> (pronounced /keɪ/) are commonly used to represent kilometre, but are not recommended by the BIPM. A slang term for the kilometre in the US and UK militaries is klick.
