Watt
The <b>watt </b> (symbol: <b>W </b>) is a unit of power. In the International System of Units (SI) it is defined as a derived unit of 1 joule per second, and is used to quantify the rate of energy transfer. In SI base units, the watt is described as kg⋅m <sup>2 </sup>⋅s <sup>−3 </sup>, which can be demonstrated to be coherent by dimensional analysis. The watt is named after James Watt, an 18th-century Scottish inventor.
Gigawatt
The <b>gigawatt</b> (<b>GW</b>) is a unit of power equal to one billion watts (10<sup>9</sup> W) in the International System of Units. It is the standard unit for expressing the output of large power stations, national electricity grids, and major industrial consumers. A large nuclear or coal-fired power plant typically produces between one and several gigawatts of electrical power.
