Watt

The <b>watt </b> (symbol: <b>W </b>) is a unit of power. In the International System of Units (SI) it is defined as a derived unit of 1 joule per second, and is used to quantify the rate of energy transfer. In SI base units, the watt is described as kg⋅m 2 ⋅s −3 , which can be demonstrated to be coherent by dimensional analysis. The watt is named after James Watt, an 18th-century Scottish inventor.

Petawatt

The <b>petawatt</b> (<b>PW</b>) is a unit of power equal to 1015 watts. It is most commonly associated with the peak power of ultrashort pulsed laser systems, which can achieve petawatt-scale instantaneous power for femtosecond durations, enabling research in laser-driven particle acceleration and nuclear fusion. The concept of a petawatt laser was first demonstrated at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1996.
