The <b>poundal</b> (<b>pdl</b>) is a unit of force in the foot–pound–second (FPS) absolute system, defined as the force required to accelerate a mass of one <b>pound-mass</b> at a rate of one <b>foot per second squared</b>. One <b>poundal</b> is equal to approximately 0.138255 <b>newtons</b>, making it considerably smaller than the pound-force. Unlike the pound-force, the poundal does not depend on the local gravitational acceleration, making it an absolute unit. It was introduced in the 19th century to provide a coherent absolute unit system analogous to the CGS dyne.
