Caractère

In computing, a character est une unité de digital storage conventionally égal à one byte (8 bits), representing a single letter, digit, punctuation mark, or control symbol. The equivalence of one character to one byte originates from early ASCII encoding, où each character was stored in exactement 8 bits. Modern encodings tel que UTF-8 may use multiple bytes per character, but the single-byte convention persists in many storage contexts.

Bit

A bit (binary digit) is the most basic unit of digital information, representing a logical state with one of two possible values: 0 or 1. The term was coined by statistician John Tukey in 1946 and popularized by Claude Shannon in his foundational work on information theory. Eight bits form one byte, the standard unit of computer storage.
