brasse

A fathom (symbol: fath) est une unité de length égal à 6 feet, exactement 1.8288 metres, traditionally used for measuring water depth. The word dérive de the Old English fæðm, meaning the outstretched arms, and the unit à l'origine represented the span of a man's arms from fingertip to fingertip. Although largely replaced by the metre in modern nautical charts, the fathom is still encountered in traditional seamanship, anchor chain measurement, and mining.

mètre

La metre (Commonwealth spelling and BIPM spelling) or meter (American spelling) (from the French unit mètre, from the Greek noun μετρούν, "measure") is the unité de base de longueur dans le Système international d'unités (SI) (SI). The unité SI symbol is m. Le mètre est défini comme the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.

Le mètre was à l'origine defined in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference is approximativement 40000 km. In 1799, the metre was redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar used was changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre was redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition a été adopté.
