Foot (US Survey)

La US survey foot (symbol: ft) est une unité de length défini comme exactement 1200/3937 metres, approximativement 0.3048006 metres, fractionally longer than the international foot of 0.3048 metres. Il était used as the basis for all geodetic surveys and public land surveys in the États-Unis, and underpins related survey units tel que the US survey chain, rod, and mile. The US survey foot was officially retired by the National Institute of Standards and Technology on 1 January 2023.

Le mètre was à l'origine defined in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference is approximativement 40000 km. In 1799, the metre was redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar used was changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre was redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition a été adopté.
