Mile (Roman)

La Roman mile (mille passuum, meaning "a thousand paces") was an ancient unit de longueur égal à 1,000 double paces (passus), or approximativement 1,480 metres. It served as the standard long-distance measurement throughout the Roman Empire and was the direct ancestor of most subsequent European miles. Roman road markers called milestones (milliaria) were placed at each Roman mile, a practice que influenced later road measurement traditions.

mètre

La metre (Commonwealth spelling and BIPM spelling) or meter (American spelling) (from the French unit mètre, from the Greek noun μετρούν, "measure") is the unité de base de longueur dans le Système international d'unités (SI) (SI). The unité SI symbol is m. Le mètre est défini comme the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.

Le mètre was à l'origine defined in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference is approximativement 40000 km. In 1799, the metre was redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar used was changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre was redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition a été adopté.
