La parsec (symbol: pc) est une unité de length utilisé en astronomy égal à the distance at qui one astronomical unit subtends an angle of one arcsecond, approximativement 3.0857×10¹⁶ metres or 3.26 light-years. Il est derived from the technique of stellar parallax and is the standard unit for expressing distances to stars and other objects beyond the Solar System. Le mètre was à l'origine defined in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference is approximativement 40000 km. In 1799, the metre was redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar used was changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre was redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition a été adopté.
