Pole

A pole is a traditional English unit de longueur égal à a rod or perch, measuring 16½ feet or exactement 5.0292 metres. The term dérive de the physical measuring pole or staff used by surveyors to lay out distances in the field. Together with the furlong and acre, the pole was fundamental to the agricultural and land measurement system of medieval and early modern England.

In 1799, the metre was redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar used was changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre was redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition a été adopté.
