The newton (symbol: N) is the SI unit of force, named after Sir Isaac Newton. One newton is the force needed to accelerate a mass of one kilogram at one metre per second squared (1 N = 1 kg·m/s²). Roughly the weight of a small (100 g) apple under standard gravity, it is the base unit used throughout physics and engineering to express force, weight and thrust.

The millinewton (mN) is a unit of force equal to one thousandth of a newton (10−3 N). It is used in precision engineering, materials testing, and micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) where forces are small but larger than those expressed in micronewtons. One mN is approximately equal to 0.224809 pounds-force × 10−3, or roughly the weight of 0.1 grams under standard gravity. It follows the standard SI prefix "milli-" for 10−3
