Fuel Cost Calculator
Free fuel cost calculator: the cost of a trip from the distance, your car's fuel economy in mpg, L/100 km or km/L and the fuel price, split between passengers.
No currency is shown on purpose: the figures come out in whatever unit you type in.
What it does
The fuel a trip uses is the distance times your car's consumption, and the cost is that amount times the price at the pump. The calculator accepts the units used around the world: litres per 100 km, kilometres per litre, and miles per gallon in US or UK gallons, which are different. A 300-mile trip at 30 mpg uses 10 US gallons; at 3.50 a gallon it costs 35.
How to use it
- Type the distance in kilometres or miles, and tick round trip if you will come back.
- Type your car's fuel economy and the fuel price, each in its unit.
- Read the trip cost, the fuel needed and the cost per person.
The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my car's fuel economy?
Fill the tank, reset the trip metre, and at the next fill-up divide the distance driven by the litres or gallons you put in. The figure from the manufacturer is usually a little better than real driving.
Why are US and UK miles per gallon different?
Because the gallons are different: a US gallon is 3.785 litres and a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres. The same car does about 20% more miles per gallon in UK figures.
How do I convert L/100 km to km/L or mpg?
Divide 100 by the L/100 km figure to get km/L, and divide 235.2 by it to get US mpg (282.5 for UK mpg). 8 L/100 km is 12.5 km/L or 29.4 US mpg.
Does the calculator include tolls and wear?
No, only fuel. Tolls, parking, tires and maintenance add to the real cost of a trip.
