What it does

This tool draws every page of the PDF in your browser, turns its colours into shades of grey using the same weights as printers (30% red, 59% green, 11% blue) and saves the pages in a new PDF of the same size. It is useful to check how a document will look on a black-and-white printer or to save colour ink.

How to use it

  1. Choose the PDF.
  2. Choose the resolution: 150 dpi for reading, 300 dpi for printing.
  3. Click Convert to grayscale and download the new PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I select the text after converting?
Because each page is saved as a grey image, the most reliable way to turn every colour (text, photos, charts) into grey. If you need searchable text, run the result through the PDF OCR tool.

Which resolution should I choose?
150 dpi is enough to read on screen and keeps the file small. Choose 300 dpi to print small text or detailed drawings.

Does it save ink?
It saves colour ink: the printer uses only black, or a mix that looks grey. Pages with large dark areas still use a lot of black ink.
