Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the tuner?
It uses the YIN pitch detection algorithm and was tested with synthetic notes from 41 Hz to 1,760 Hz, with errors below a quarter of a cent; with background noise it stays within a few cents. In a quiet room it is as precise as a clip-on tuner.

Should I use 440 Hz or 432 Hz?
A4 = 440 Hz is the international standard used by almost all bands and recordings. Some orchestras tune a little higher, at 442 or 443 Hz. Use 432 Hz only if you are playing with others tuned that way.

Is the sound recorded?
No. The microphone signal is analysed in your browser a few times per second and immediately discarded; nothing is stored or sent to a server.
