Mouse Test
Click every button of your mouse inside the box: left, right, middle and the two side buttons light up and are counted. Scroll the wheel in both directions and move the mouse quickly to estimate the polling rate. If a single click is counted twice, the page warns you: it is the classic sign of a worn switch.
| Button | Clicks | Double click |
|---|---|---|
| Left | 0 | — |
| Middle (wheel) | 0 | — |
| Right | 0 | — |
| Back (side) | 0 | — |
| Forward (side) | 0 | — |
How to use it
- Click each button several times inside the box and check that each one lights up.
- Scroll up and down and move the mouse fast in circles to see the polling rate.
- Click slowly, one click at a time, for a minute: any bounce warning points to a faulty switch.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my mouse double-clicks by itself?
Click slowly, once at a time. A worn switch bounces and sends two clicks a few milliseconds apart; nobody clicks faster than about 80 ms on purpose, so the page flags those pairs. Cleaning rarely helps; the switch or the mouse usually has to be replaced.
What is the polling rate?
How many times per second the mouse reports its position: usually 125, 500 or 1000 Hz. The value here is an estimate from the movement events the browser receives, which can be lower than what the mouse sends.
The side buttons do not light up. Is the mouse broken?
Not necessarily. Some mouse software turns them into other functions or keystrokes, and then the browser never sees a button press. Reset the buttons to their default in the manufacturer's app and test again.
