What it does

This converter writes numbers and amounts of money in words, the way they go on cheques, receipts, contracts and invoices: “one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents”, “mil duzentos e trinta e quatro reais e cinquenta e seis centavos”, “หนึ่งพันสองร้อยสามสิบสี่บาทถ้วน”. Each language follows its own rules, such as where to put “e” in Portuguese, “un millón de pesos” in Spanish or ถ้วน at the end of Thai amounts, and the currency is declined correctly.

How to use it

  1. Type the number or the amount, with or without thousands separators.
  2. Choose the language and the currency. The page starts with the ones of your country.
  3. Pick the style and letter case, then copy the result to your cheque, receipt or invoice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write the amount on a cheque?
Write the amount in words on the line below the payee, starting at the left edge, and draw a line through the space that is left. In the United States the cents are usually written as a fraction: “One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars”; choose the cheque style for that format.

Why “um milhão de reais” and “mil e duzentos reais”?
In Portuguese the currency takes “de” after a round million or billion (um milhão de reais), and “e” joins the last group when it is below 100 or a round hundred (mil e duzentos, mil e oitenta), but not otherwise (mil duzentos e trinta). Portugal also uses the long scale: 10⁹ is “mil milhões”.

What is the Mexican invoice format?
Mexican electronic invoices (CFDI) usually show the total in words in capital letters with the cents as a fraction and M.N. (moneda nacional): “MIL DOSCIENTOS TREINTA Y CUATRO PESOS 56/100 M.N.”. Choose Spanish, the peso, the cheque style and uppercase.

What about baht, rupiah and other currencies?
Thai amounts follow the BAHTTEXT rules: ถ้วน (exactly) at the end when there are no satang, and เอ็ด for a final one (หนึ่งร้อยเอ็ดบาท). Indonesian terbilang and Vietnamese amounts are written in whole rupiah and đồng. Arabic, Russian and other languages agree the currency with the number.

Is it accurate?
Every language was compared with an independent number-to-words library on thousands of numbers, and the cases where the libraries are wrong were written by hand. Numbers are handled as text, so even 16-digit amounts are exact.
