Maine paycheck taxes in 2026
What it does
A paycheck calculator shows how much of your gross pay reaches your bank account. From each paycheck your employer withholds federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%), state income tax in most states, and in some states disability or paid family leave contributions and local income taxes. 401(k) contributions and pre-tax benefits such as health insurance, HSA and FSA come out before income tax, which lowers it. This calculator works out the yearly tax for your situation and divides it by your number of paychecks.
How to use it
- Choose your state and type your yearly salary, or your hourly rate and hours per week.
- Choose how often you are paid, your filing status and your dependents.
- Add your 401(k) percentage and benefits, and read the take-home pay per paycheck.
The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my real paycheck a little different?
Employers use the IRS and state withholding tables, which spread the year's tax evenly and round each paycheck; some states withhold at a slightly higher rate than the tax you finally owe. Bonuses, overtime, a job change in the middle of the year or extra withholding on your W-4 also change it. The difference is settled when you file your tax return.
What are Social Security and Medicare (FICA)?
They are the federal payroll taxes for retirement and health care. Social Security is 6.2% of pay up to $184,500 a year; Medicare is 1.45% of all pay, plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000. Unlike income tax, they do not depend on your filing status or dependents.
How does a 401(k) change my take-home pay?
Traditional 401(k) and 403(b) contributions are taken before federal and most state income taxes (not in Pennsylvania or New Jersey), so each dollar you save costs you less than a dollar of take-home pay. They still pay Social Security and Medicare. The yearly limit is $24,500.
Which benefits are pre-tax?
Health, dental and vision insurance through your employer, HSA and FSA contributions are usually taken through a cafeteria (section 125) plan: they lower income tax and also Social Security and Medicare. Roth 401(k) contributions, union dues and wage garnishments are after-tax.
Is overtime or tip income tax-free now?
From 2025 to 2028 a federal deduction covers part of qualified overtime pay (up to $12,500, or $25,000 for joint filers) and qualified tips (up to $25,000), with a phase-out at higher incomes. Social Security, Medicare and most state taxes still apply, and employers only withhold less if you claim the deduction on your W-4, so this calculator leaves it out.
